New York Knife Co.
of Walden, NY was the original; supplier of official Scout knives. The
shield said Be Prepared. NYK had an exclusive contract with the BSA 1911-
1923. Although the May 1925 Supply Catalog offers the NYK (#1004) at a
discount. Perhaps old inventories were discovered, the discount was not
repeated and the #1004 pattern was not sold again. In 1923 the Hammer Brand
(still NYK Co) was introduced with the etched 1st Class in an oval logo.
This knife was available in the ordinary (larger) and smaller size. Hammer
made official Scout knives until 1931. |

Earliest (official) knives 1913-1923, had a Be Prepared “banner” logo and an
unusually long shackle. Unless noted, Hammer Brand knives have removeable
shackles. |

Hammer
went out of business in 1932. Hammer used the term cap lifter to describe a
bottle opener.

NYK/Hammer 4 blade knives all have one line on the bolster. 2 blade knives
so not have lines. |

These early Boy Scout knifes made by NYK Co. seems like they ought to be
official, but I cannot find them in any early catalogs. Before the BSA
became incorporated (1916) many companies used the Boy Scout name to
identify the pattern style. I suspect that the NY Knife Co. might have
produced these early knives, 1913-1917/18 before the BSA put an end to
knives with a boy scout wording. The early official knives had a Be Prepared
shield, perhaps these knives were sold through NYK Co. distributors. |

This worksheet is about Antique and Vintage knives. To be “vintage” items
have to be 40 years old. I’m pushing it a couple years with some of these
75th anniversary knives made in 1985. Realizing that I don’t have much
intertest in modern knives, I have however included material when it came to
me. |

This is the 75th Anniversary commemorative knife patterned after the 1913
New York Knife Co. On the original the Be Prepared is inverted. I don’t
believe that NY Knife made this knife, the company has been out of business
for years. But, that’s how the tang is stamped. A code 01350 is visible on
the bolster, hard to see but visible with magnification.
